Abstract:
Within the development of human spaceflight activities, robots supporting and servicing astronauts are anticipated. Robotic technologies have been historically serving space exploration, especially in unmanned deep space exploration. In human spaceflight activities robotic manipulator systems have been supporting astronauts’ by supporting their work in hazardous extravehicular activities. For the upcoming human space exploration as well as commercial utilization of the space environment, synergy of robotic systems working in direct contact with astronauts is anticipated. Such service robots in space (SRS) are considered in various forms demonstrating some capabilities on the International Space Station (ISS). While the service robots industry is also growing on the ground-applications, synergy of these research and development activities is expected. However, the development of the SRS requires in-depth knowledge of the rules and constraints specific to space development. This includes an interface with spacecrafts and astronauts, such as safety requirements or limited resources, as well as technical challenges, such as dynamics control or environmental conditions. These constraints increase the challenges for potential SRS providers that have no space application experience. This paper will discuss the potential guidelines, standardization and benchmark of the SRS to ease and accelerate the entry of non-space players.
